As a manager and leader, we are “success-seekers” by nature.  After all, I haven’t met a manager who isn’t chasing success.  With that said, have you ever set aside the time to define what success really means to you (or your team)?  How do you know you’re winning the game?

Different people approach this question differently.  Some think in terms of dollar amounts and financial figures.  Others think in terms of impact on the organization or its people.  The bottom-line is there is no right or wrong answer here.

OK.. the only wrong answer is… to not have spent any time thinking about what success means to you, your team or organization.

Customers are the life-force of any business.  Whether you’re customer facing, or play an internal role, you always have customers. And it’s important to know who they are and what they expect.

This post highlights the main customer types managers should be focused on. This post also provides an exercise to ensure you identify the obvious (and not so obvious) customers, as well as the determining the strength of that customer base. Read more…

Have you ever had one of those days, where your day is nearly half-over and you realize all you’ve done is busy work AND you have not progressed on the things really important in moving your strategic agenda forward?  Well, the last couple of days has been that way for me.

I have to admit, I’ve been a little frustrated at myself for not taking charge of my day.  Even worse, I got caught up in everyone else’s agendas and failed to really step back and get my mind refocused.

Questions of Leadership: Questions Every Leader and Manager Should Thinking About

April 13th, 2011 1 comment

areyouready I recently wrote a blog post, The Questioning Manager: The Power of Questions.  That post really got me thinking about the importance of having a questioning mindset.

LIGHT BULB MOMENT!!!! – That’s when it hit me square in the eyes… Wouldn’t it be great to have a series dedicated to asking the questions every leader should be asking and thinking about!?!?!

When I sat down and thought about all of the questions we should be asking ourselves, I felt like I entered a candy store.  All I saw… piles of mind candy for future thinking.  It was both exhilarating and overwhelming!

Thus, The Questioning Leader Series is born!

I’m literally giddy to get this series started.  So without further adieu, let’s get going!

This blog post will serve as the landing page for all of the posts in The Questioning Leader series.  This list will continue to expand and change as I create the content and get new ideas(my creative license – sort of speak).

Over time, I will delve into each question.  I will share my perspective on why the question is a critical one to ask, as well as highlight some considerations for your own reflective thinking.  I hope you will join me and engage in this journey to better questioning and thinking! Read more…
